Professor Adballah and Professor Jiang have designed the ASTAM Graded Mock Exam to mirror the SOA Exam ASTAM. This Mock Exam has all the typical elements your SOA exam will have plus the questions and format are set up just like the SOA ASTAM exam. This allows you to gain insights into the content, format and your strengths and weaknesses prior to taking the exam.

How does it work?

  • You will receive the ACTEX ASTAM Graded Mock Exam by mid February
  • The Mock Exam will come in a PDF format. You will write your solutions on your own paper.
  • Take the exam in the allotted time so you can simulate the 3 hours that will be given at the actual exam
  • To submit your solutions for grading, you will scan and email to the instructor. Last submission date: April 9th
  • Prof. Jiang and Prof. Abdallah will review, grade and provide written feedback within 2 weeks

About the Authors

Sam Broverman, Ph.D., ASA

Professor Sam Broverman, PhD, ASA, brings 30+ years of university and exam prep teaching experience to bear to ensure that purchasers of this manual gain a thorough understanding of all the topics covered on the exam syllabus. He has been a Professor of Actuarial Mathematics since 1978, first at The University of Texas at Austin until 1980 and since then at the University of Toronto. Professor Broverman is an ACTEX author who has written numerous textbooks and study guides widely used by students preparing for actuarial exams.

Wenjun Jiang, Ph.D.

Wenjun Jiang is an assistant professor in actuarial data analytics at University of Calgary. He earned his PhD degree in statistics from the University of Western Ontario, his masters degree in actuarial mathematics from Concordia University and a bachelor degree in applied math from Tianjin University. Professor Wang’s research interests include: Design of optimal (re)insurance, risk measures, clustering of financial assets, and dependence structures.

Anas Abdallah, Ph.D.

Anas Abdallah obtained his Engineering and master’s degree in Mathematical and Statistical Modeling from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquees (INSA), in France. He then decided to undertake a MSc. and then a PhD in Actuarial Science, in Canada. His applied thesis has been awarded the Hachemeister prize, by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) in 2016, to recognize the impact on the actuarial industry in North America. Anas has extensive work experience in the insurance industry (2011-2018), where he had the opportunity to work in Corporate Actuarial Services, Research and Innovation team, and Actuarial Pricing & Segmentation department. He joined McMaster University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor in the department of Mathematics & Statistics and he is also the Actuarial and Financial Mathematics (AFM) program coordinator. Thanks to the applied research and engagement with the industry, the AFM program was awarded the 2020 CAS University Award. Anas Abdallah’s research lies in the area of Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance, and more particularly in pricing/ratemaking and reserving.
